Why Green?
The built environment has a profound impact on our natural environment, economy, health, and productivity.

In the United States alone, buildings account for:
  • 65% of electricity consumption,
  • 36% of energy use,
  • 30% of greenhouse gas emissions,
  • 30% of raw materials use,
  • 30% of waste output (136 million tons annually), and
  • 12% of potable water consumption.

Breakthroughs in building science, technology, and operations are available to designers, builders, and owners who want to build green and maximize both economic and environmental performance.

Environmental benefits:
  • Enhance and protect ecosystems and biodiversity
  • Improve air and water quality
  • Reduce solid waste
  • Conserve natural resources
Economic benefits:
  • Reduce operating costs
  • Enhance asset value and profits
  • Improve employee productivity and satisfaction
  • Optimize life-cycle economic performance
Health and community benefits:
  • Improve air, thermal, and acoustic environments
  • Enhance occupant comfort and health
  • Minimize strain on local infrastructure
  • Contribute to overall quality of life

What is Green Building?

The office of the Federal Environmental Executive defines green building as “the practice of 1) increasing the efficiency with which buildings and their sites use energy, water, and materials, and 2) reducing building impacts on human health and the environment, through better siting, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal – the complete building life cycle.”

what is leed?
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria.

LEED Rating System
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. Developed by USGBC, LEED addresses all building types and emphasizes state-of-the-art strategies for sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials and resources selection, and indoor environmental quality. LEED is a practical rating tool for green building design and construction that provides immediate and measurable results for building owners and occupants. The actual rating system is as follows; Certified, Silver, Gold, Platinum, with Platinum as the highest rating. Learn more about the LEED Rating System.

Project Certification
LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building project is environmentally responsible, profitable and a healthy place to live and work. Learn more about Project Certification.

Professional Accreditation
LEED Accredited Professionals are professionals who have demonstrated a thorough understanding of green building practices and principles and familiarity with LEED requirements, resources and processes. Learn more about Professional Accreditation here.
